Family of Origin and Family Therapy

This training is designed for participants to learn and practice how a person’s family of origin influences their current functioning, relationships and decision making. A close review of birth order and sibling position will give context to current functioning, decision making and how intimacy is created.

Family structure creates a foundation for our lives and creates legacies. This training offers clinicians options to assist clients in keeping the family legacies that work for them and letting go of the ones that do not.

Learning Objectives:

  • Characteristics of birth order, sibling positions and their development of intimacy
  • Family of Origin legacies, rules, and belonging.
  • How to assess a family system.
  • What are the family’s said and unsaid roles and rules?
  • How to interrupt dysfunctional communication and patterns.
  • How is the family fused and who is aligned with whom?
  • What is the generational history and how does it impact the family now?
  • How do mental health and substance use disorders impact the family?
  • Participants will practice useful Interventions.
